Frequently Asked Questions About Quercetin Supplements

What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a form of flavonoid antioxidant found in plants and foods such as peppers, apples, dark cherries, tomatoes, leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, and onions. It is considered to be one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, which are important for inhibiting the effects of free radicals.

Free radicals are groups of atoms that have an unpaired number of electrons. Because of this, they are volatile, and their unpaired electron makes them bump into other molecules and steal one of their electrons.

When this happens, the structure of the victim molecule is changed, and it now becomes a free radical. This can rapidly produce a domino effect, and millions of molecules can be altered rapidly. When free radicals steal electrons from important structures such as DNA, enzymes, and protein molecules, their normal functioning as drastically altered. Such free radical damage can result in degenerative diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Your body is generally adept at keeping free radicals in check. It does so with the help of free radical scavengers. The scavengers neutralize volatile free radicals, rendering them harmless. However, problems begin to arise when your body has too many free radicals, and they begin to cause damage to the immune system or genetic material. To avoid this, you need to recruit a defense system of antioxidants, such as quercetin.

What Are the Uses & Benefits of Quercetin?

As well as being a powerful antioxidant, quercetin has numerous other health benefits. Here is a rundown of quercetin benefits.

  • Antioxidant: Quercetin is a potent antioxidant, so it can help protect the body’s cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Blood pressure: In a 2007 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, participants with prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension (44 patients in total), were given 365mg quercetin twice each day in a two-phase trial. During the first phase, each subject was given the twice-daily dose of quercetin for a period of fourteen days. During the second phase, the subjects were enrolled in either a supplementation phase or a placebo phase. The two phases were separated by a two-week washout period. The result showed that quercetin supplementation did reduce blood pressure in stage 1 hypertensive subjects. More research is needed.
  • Lipids: A 2012 preliminary study published in Medicinski Arhiv, revealed that quercetin may be able to lower blood lipids. More research is needed.

A number of other health claims about quercetin are frequently circulated by supplement manufacturers, these include quercetin can:

  • Increase the capacity for running
  • Improve glucose levels
  • Boost fat oxidation
  • Improve total body hydrations during exercise
  • Improve heart rate
  • Improve inflammation
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Improve uric acid concentrations

How Do I Take Quercetin?

There is no standardized recommended quercetin dosage. Examine suggests a quercetin supplement dosage within the range of 12.5 to 25mg per kilogram of body weight.

Their research team also suggests that if you are taking a quercetin supplement, taking it along with another bioflavonoid, such as green tea, resveratrol, bromelain, or genistein may increase the benefits by synergistically increasing the potency.

Are There Any Side Effects of Quercetin?

Quercetin is generally considered to be safe when taken orally at the suggested dosage. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, and upset stomach.

Quercetin may increase intestinal permeability. The intestinal barrier in the gut is only one cell thick. Prolonged heavy exercise can trigger leaky gut. This occurs when the intestinal barrier becomes compromised. Symptoms include gas, bloating, chronic diarrhea, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and headaches. A 2011 study published in the American Journal of Physiology showed that taking a quercetin supplement while exercising exhaustively can impair the intestinal barrier and increase the risk of leaky gut syndrome.

Taking a quercetin supplement while you are on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may increase your estradiol and inhibit the effectiveness of other forms of estrogen, and so should be avoided.

Consult your doctor before taking a quercetin supplement if you are taking the calcium channel blocker felodipine for high blood pressure.

How Do I Pick a Good Quercetin Product?

When you are looking for a high-quality quercetin supplement, one important thing to take into consideration is the form it takes. The form of quercetin that is most readily absorbed by the human body is quercetin dihydrate. Quercetin glycoside, aglycone, and rutinoside are not as bioavailable.

You should also look for a supplement that is non-GMO and made with organic ingredients that have been tested for purity. The best quercetin supplements contain no additives, common allergens, or unnecessary fillers.
